About Farrel

Originally from California, Farrel Gabrielle Duncan has been living in her adopted home of Brooklyn NY since 1997. Since 2010, she has owned and operated a private practice in the Union Square neighborhood of NYC. She feels blessed to be a part of a 3,000 year old tradition of powerful, complex Medicine which has changed her life, and the lives of many of her patients.

Farrel Duncan was trained for 8 years in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and strongly influenced by Classical Acupuncture (with study under Ann Cecil-Sterman and Jeffrey Yuen), Five Element Acupuncture (with study under Dr. Anne Jeffres and Thea Elijah), and advanced Cupping techniques (with Susan Johnson, an understudy of Miriam Lee in CA and China.) The First Visit

Before your first visit, I ask that you complete the Comprehensive Intake Form and bring it with you to your consultation. The initial consultation with first treatment typically lasts 1.5 hours. Bring with you any copies of important previous tests, recent lab results, and a list of any medications or supplements you are currently taking.

Acupuncture Office Desk

Eating something light 1 hour before an appointment is important as food is the fuel that gives your body the energy to fully integrate the treatment.

Please aim to arrive 5 minutes early, wear comfortable clothing, and turn off your wireless devices.

Lastly, please avoid strenuous activities or workouts after our treatments, and avoid cocktails on treatment days. Essentially your treatment is integrating and continuing for many hours after you walk out our door and all the aforementioned disrupts the effects of Acupuncture.

Treatment

During our sessions, we will discuss your physical, mental, and emotional health. I will note symptoms while delving into the root cause of the disease for which you are seeking treatment. I also take your pulse in the beginning of and throughout the session. The pulse is a very powerful diagnostic tool in Eastern Medicine and can tell us a lot on its own. We will also look at your tongue for diagnostic purposes. I ask further questions to help me make a diagnosis and develop your treatment plan. You are highly encouraged to share with me anything that is “coming up” for you, or that you want to work on during our session.

Acupuncture Office Treatment Room

All of this information is key in establishing a complete diagnosis for Traditional Eastern Medicine treatment. It is our golden roadmap: a customized treatment plan that will enable the healing process in the most accurate and effective way.

After our conversation and diagnostic intake, Acupuncture needles are then inserted into specific Acupuncture points and are retained for around 30 minutes. Other therapies such as Cupping, Gua Sha (a massage technique with a jade tool), electro-stimulation on body areas and on specific Acupuncture points, Motor and Trigger myo-fascial release, and essential oil therapy are frequently incorporated.

Aftercare

Stay hydrated, eat well that day, and  definitely avoid stress and alcohol for 24 hours after sessions. I will advise you as we work together with specific guidance for post-treatment e.g. hydration, nutritional guidelines for the next few days, covering up after Cupping therapy, etc.

Always feel free to contact me with any post-treatment questions or concerns.

Follow Up
Treatments

Your treatment plan will include a recommendation for follow-up visits that I believe you will need in order to see true improvement in your case. Follow-up visits typically last one hour. Your initial treatment plan will also include your Acupuncture therapy, Herbal Medicine, Nutrition counseling, and Lifestyle Modification.

My process is a combination of critical methodology, medical analytics, as well as intuitive work; I ask that you be open to conversation to see where it leads us. However, our shared space is protected, safe, and HIPAA-enforced private. With that said, there is no pressure to tell me anything and you get to decide exactly how much that you would like to reveal as we work together.

FAQs

What does acupuncture feel like – a.k.a. “does it hurt”?
This is a common question and one that I myself had before I first tried acupuncture. People feel a range of sensations once the needles are inserted which are not painful. These mild sensations can include feeling an ache, warmth, slight soreness, or heaviness. Medical needles to draw blood or give shots bear no resemblance to what we use. Acupuncture needles are very thin, so thin that they bend like a strand of hair.

The best part……
Besides getting healthy, the best part of an Acupuncture treatment is how totally relaxing a treatment is: acupuncture is like a bath for your nervous system. Many people feel like they are in a meditative state during a treatment, and many others even fall asleep. This is one reason why we are known for treating stress so effectively.

How many treatments will I need?
Most health problems take more than one treatment to resolve. Expect to have five treatments before reassessment. Many chronic problems may require ten or more treatments before significant benefits are seen. However, you should see an overall improvement in your health as your main complaint improves.

How does Acupuncture work according to science?
Some theories about how Acupuncture works:

- influences the autonomic nervous system, the parasympathetic nervous system, and the enteric (gut) nervous system: thus it supports metabolism and catabolism, organ function, and brain wave activity.

- influences the release of neurotransmitters, substances that transmit nerve impulses to the brain, thus have an impact on anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders.

- stimulates the release of pain-relieving endorphins.

- stimulates circulation and quickens the blood, thus healing injury and trauma more quickly and effectively.

- influences the electrical currents of the human body (an electric vessel with electrical charges and actions that determine cell growth, cell movement, organ function, synaptic
activity, metabolic energy, and more.

Acupuncture
Works

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been used for over 3,000 years. Acupuncture is based upon the idea that there are pathways or channels in the body. Just as we have a circulatory system of blood and lymphatic fluid, we have energetic channels - all join together to create an interconnected web, or lace-like network in our body.

Geometric chart

Acupuncture is concerned with the flow of Qi (pronounced CHEE) in a patient. Qi is the motive force at work in our bodies  -- akin to metabolism, circulation, cell development -- and is necessary for all of the body’s activities to take place. Acupuncture also focuses on the substances of the body -- the Blood and body fluids -- which can become deficient or abundant. When the Qi, Blood, or fluids become deficient, stuck, or abundant throughout the body, they create imbalances which result in pain, illness, or disease.

During an Acupuncture treatment, we work with the body’s network and pathways by stimulating specific points on the body. These points are like doors or entrances along the pathways -- they provide specific leverage whereby I can direct the body back into balance. When there is balance, pain, illness, and disease are rectified.

Conditions
Treated

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can be beneficial for almost any condition, because your practitioner treats you and your particular pattern of imbalance. Our medicine is concerned with the underlying root causes to pain and sickness - not just the signs and symptoms that your condition is showing.

Below is a list of many of the issues that the National Institute of Health and the World Health Organization have studied to determine efficacy of Acupuncture:

NEUROLOGICAL
Headache / migraine, Neuralgia, Post-operative pain, Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Bell's palsy, Facial and jaw pain

IMMUNE
Common cold / flu, Sinusitis,Tonsillitis, Bronchitis, Allergies, Asthma / Pnemonia

WOMENS’ MENS’ HEALTH
Impotence, Menstrual Syndromes, Peri-Menopause & Menopause syndormes, Uterine Fibroids, Ovarian Cysts, PMS, Infertility, Pregnancy support, Cancer support

MUSCULOSKELETAL
Joint & Limb pain, Neck & shoulder pain, Low back pain / Sciatica, Arthritis, Strains / sprains, Muscle spasms / cramps / post surgery healing / Fibromyalgia

EMOTIONAL
Depression, Anxiety / Scattered thinking / Insomnia / Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

DIGESTIVE

COVID-19

Our mandate is
PROTECTION
PREVENTION
TREATMENT
for all stages of viral infection
RECOVERY
and key RECUPERATIVE CARE

We have been treating the syndrome of COVID-19 (in its many stages and permutations, as well as its prevention, and finally the long recuperation period) since March 1st 2020. We have learned a lot.  It a monster virus and it has to get treated. 90% of the patients who recovered in Asia worked with Eastern Medicine in addition to Western therapies.

Beach with footsteps

The Ling Collective offers treatment of COVID-19 symptoms (shortness of breath, ongoing fatigue, joint pain, headaches, dizziness, poor circulation, lack of taste and/or smell, and the ole dry cough that refuses to go away. Additionally, we address the stress and anxiety, as well as underlying health imbalances that are happening concurrently during your fight with the virus.

With COVID-19, customized Herbal Medicine is crucial. Additionally we have found that many people require Acupuncture and its additional therapies (especially Cupping therapy) to pull out of the back-slides, and to finally see an impact on the stubborn, persistent symptoms. Thus, our imperative is to be treating individuals in person as well as through any remote medicine, or a combination thereof. If you have friends, family, colleagues etc, who may have been infected with COVID-19 and are dealing with acute symptoms or the long aftermath, please have them reach out to me directly.

Virtual Medicine Session | COVID-19 - $95.00 (30 min)

We’ll figure out where in the life cycle of the virus you are, and the best formula to comfortably manage your symptoms so you recover as quickly as possible.

We also work with many other plans as an Out-of-Network provider, including United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna, and Oxford.

+ Please call your insurance plan and see if you have BENEFITS for ACUPUNCTURE: call the number on the back of your insurance card and use our question prompt here below.

+ ASK:

1. Is Acupuncture a covered benefit in my policy?

2. Is Acupuncture covered for both In-Network and Out-of-Network providers?

3. What is my ANNUAL DEDUCTIBLE as it applies to ACUPUNCTURE?

4. What are my VISIT RESTRICTIONS annually i.e. 20 or 30 visits per year?

5. Is a referral needed from my primary care physician (pcp)?

If you have benefits, please know that I will advocate for you with your Insurance Company to assist you in getting the care that you need, with the benefits that you are due. Calling and dealing with insurance companies can be frustrating for patient and doctors alike. Trust me: I have taking insurance for 10yrs, I know the headaches intimately. However, if we lay the groundwork by getting accurate information about your benefits and deductible etc, it becomes quite manageable and truly beneficial for the scope of care for our patients. So stay positive and help me get your benefit details.
